Macquarie Joins Rate-Cutting Frenzy as Lenders Vie for Market Share
Australia's Macquarie Bank has joined the rate-cutting frenzy in the mortgage market. The bank has reduced its lowest variable rate home loans by 0.05 percentage points, making them now available at 6.04 percent for new customers only.
This move is part of a broader trend among lenders to remain competitive in light of potential Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) rate cuts. Since June 1, 28 lenders have lowered their variable home loan rates for new customers, with Macquarie joining notable banks such as Bendigo Bank, BOQ, Suncorp, and AMP.
Sally Tindall, Canstar's data insights director, noted that the heightened competition between Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) and Macquarie is driving growth in loan portfolios. CBA saw a significant increase of $5 billion in its loan book in just one month, while Macquarie added $3.4 billion to its portfolio in June.
The RBA's potential rate cuts have led lenders to adjust their rates, which could benefit consumers seeking better deals. However, current borrowers are advised to consider taking proactive steps to negotiate with their existing banks or refinance to secure more favorable terms.
