Magna's Trade Deal and Loonie Gains Could Boost Bottom Line
Magna International (TSE:MG; NYSE:MGA) could gain from both lower auto tariffs and a firmer Canadian dollar. Draft terms in trade talks between Canada and the US may reduce tariffs on Canadian-built vehicles to 15% from 25%, and metals duties to 25% from 50%. These changes would cut cross-border friction for Canadian manufacturers.
The currency channel is already visible, with Magna reporting a $692 million first-half FX translation lift. This added about 3.3% to its reported sales, demonstrating the importance of the Canadian dollar's strength even before tariff savings. In its second-quarter release, Magna stated that its strong results reflected 'solid operating performance and disciplined execution.'
Analysts remain divided on the outlook for Magna, with nine of 20 recommendations in August being positive, ten Hold, and one Strong Sell. UBS still recommends buying USD/CAD toward 1.425, reflecting the US rate advantage.
