Manitoba Raises Rent Control Threshold to $2,000
The Manitoba government is expanding rent control in the province by raising the monthly rent exemption threshold to $2,000. This change will apply to rental units effective January 1, 2027.
Public Service Delivery Minister Mintu Sandhu announced the decision, stating that it 'is the largest expansion of rent control in decades' and will result in lower costs for thousands of families.
The monthly rent exemption threshold is currently set at $1,670. The increase to $2,000 means more rental units will be subject to rent-regulation rules, which are intended to protect affordable housing for Manitobans.
The 2027 rent guideline will also be set at three percent, which is within the Bank of Canada's inflation-control target range. This guideline applies to most residential rental properties, including apartments, single rooms, houses, and duplexes.
