Manufacturing Sector Sees Resilient Growth Amid Inflationary Pressures
The US manufacturing sector has shown resilience in the face of lingering inflationary pressures. Strong demand for manufactured goods after a prolonged period of weakness has supported this growth, with the industry showing a turnaround from earlier in the year.
According to the Federal Reserve's report, US industrial production increased 0.1% in June and rose 4% during the second quarter. This strong performance follows a similar gain in May and marks its fastest quarterly growth in five years.
The sector's momentum has been fueled by heavy investment in artificial intelligence, with production of computers and peripheral equipment rising 9.2% year over year in June and increasing 7.2% during the second quarter. Motor vehicle and parts production grew 0.7%, while output of semiconductors and related electronic components increased 0.5% month over month.
The Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes had been considered, but inflation cooled significantly in June after fighting between the US and Iran subsided. The consumer price index (CPI) fell 0.4% from the previous month in June after rising 0.5% in May. On an annual basis, CPI eased to 3.5% in June from 4.2% in May.
Two mutual funds with significant exposure to the manufacturing sector are Fidelity Select Defense & Aerospace Portfolio (FSDAX) and Fidelity Select Automotive Portfolio (FSAVX). These funds have a Zacks Mutual Fund Rank #2 (Buy), with encouraging three and five-year returns. They also have lower expense ratios compared to their categories.
