Manufacturing's Next AI Phase: Integration, Accountability, and Quality
The manufacturing industry is entering a new phase of AI adoption, moving beyond the 'copilot' era and into embedded decision support across the product lifecycle. Propel Software's latest outlook identifies five trends expected to shape product innovation through the second half of 2026: Model Context Protocol (MCP), the rise of the AI 'co-engineer,' an expanded digital thread, stronger accountability for AI-driven decisions, and quality becoming a revenue signal rather than a cost line.
One of the most interesting trends is MCP, which addresses the industry's long-standing frustration with fragmented enterprise data. Manufacturers have spent years trying to reconcile engineering, quality, supply chain, and commercial information sitting in disconnected systems. MCP allows AI to query business systems through prompts and act as a unified intelligence layer across functions.
The Canadian comparison is telling. The Bank of Canada reported that AI adoption among Canadian firms remains at an early stage for production purposes, but interest has shifted from personal use to operational integration. Statistics Canada found that Canadian firms with complementary capabilities, such as cloud computing, data analytics, robotics, and ICT training, are significantly more likely to adopt AI successfully.
Propel's second trend is the evolution of AI from a productivity tool to 'co-engineer.' This distinction is important, as it determines whether AI remains a conversational assistant or becomes something more akin to an engineering partner operating within defined human parameters. The company argues that accountability will shift from best practice to business requirement.
The digital thread is expanding, with products now consisting of physical items, software layers, service models, and subscription revenue. This means product data cannot remain static; it needs to become a live business asset linking development decisions to field performance, quality events, and commercial outcomes in real-time.
