Maria Callas Shortlisted for New Euro Banknote Design

The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled proposed designs for the next series of euro banknotes, featuring iconic figures from European culture. Among those shortlisted is Greek opera legend Maria Callas, who would appear on the €5 banknote under the theme 'European culture'.

Callas is joined by other prominent figures such as Ludwig van Beethoven (€10), Marie Curie (€20), Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (€50), Leonardo da Vinci (€100) and Bertha von Suttner (€200). The ECB also presented designs based on a second theme, 'Rivers and birds,' which include proposed banknotes featuring rivers and birds from across the European Union.

The shortlisted designs emerged from an EU-wide competition that attracted over 1,200 applications from graphic designers. Twenty-five designers were invited to submit proposals, which were assessed by an independent jury of 21 experts.

ECB President Christine Lagarde emphasized the significance of euro banknotes as a tangible expression of European identity, stating 'Euro banknotes are more than a means of payment, they are one of the most tangible expressions of Europe.' The ECB's Governing Council is expected to select the final design concept by the end of 2026.
