Market Holds Breath as Fed Decision Looms
The market is holding its breath ahead of the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates. As investors await the Fed's announcement, stock prices have been fluctuating. The S&P 500 slipped 0.2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 289 points or 0.6% as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time.
The widespread expectation is that the Fed will hike the federal funds rate for the first time in three years to combat inflation, which has remained above 3%. However, this move could have short-term consequences, making it more expensive for households and businesses to borrow money and potentially undercutting stock prices.
Nvidia and other chip companies, leaders in the AI industry, held steadier after Monday's slide. Nvidia rose 1.1% after its 3.4% drop was the heaviest weight on the S&P 500 index. Advanced Micro Devices climbed 2.4%. These stocks have been under pressure due to worries that their prices shot too high in the AI frenzy.
The bond market has also seen significant changes, with yields rising due to concerns about inflation and the massive U.S. government debt level. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 5.00% from 4.97% late Monday, a level not seen since 2023.
