Market Tensions Mount as Fed and BOJ Prepare for Rate Decisions
Markets are bracing for key decisions from the Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan this week, amidst rising tensions in the Middle East and soaring energy prices. The Fed's meeting on Wednesday is expected to be a crucial one, with many investors anticipating a quarter-point interest rate hike to combat stubborn inflation.
Fed Funds futures indicate that markets are leaning towards a hike, although some traders remain skeptical due to the central bank's consistent decision to keep rates unchanged throughout 2026. The new Fed Chairman, Kevin Warsh, has delivered a hawkish tone in recent weeks, bolstering bets on a rate hike.
The Bank of Japan is also set to make its decision on September 18, with markets almost certain that policymakers will raise rates by 25 basis points to 1.25% - the highest level in over three decades. Analysts see the BOJ's October and December meetings as highly likely for further changes, while swap markets have priced in rates reaching 1.5% by January.
Rising oil prices are also a concern, with Brent crude surging back above $100 per barrel for the first time since July. Physical prices are above $120, and diesel has hit record highs, sparking threats of food inflation.
