Markets Bet on BoJ Rate Hike at September Meeting with 80% Probability
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda has maintained his cautious stance on daily yen fluctuations, but financial markets are convinced that a rate hike is imminent at the September policy meeting.
In an address to lawmakers in Tokyo, Ueda reinforced the BoJ's long-standing approach by stating that monetary policy is guided by economic and price data, not short-term exchange-rate movements.
The yen has been experiencing notable volatility against the dollar due to diverging monetary policy expectations between the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan. Despite Ueda's reticence on future policy direction, market pricing suggests a strong consensus for a 15-basis-point hike at the September meeting.
Overnight index swaps and bond market pricing indicate that traders assign a probability of roughly 80% to a rate increase, reflecting growing confidence in the central bank's gradual tightening cycle. Robust wage growth and inflation persistently above the BoJ's 2% target are key drivers behind these expectations.
