Markets Edge Up Despite Tariffs, Oil Price Volatility
U.S. markets opened higher on Friday despite ongoing global tensions and economic uncertainties.
The S&P 500 futures rose by 0.2%, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures increased by 0.4%. Nasdaq futures were up 0.1% in premarket trading, but all three indexes are still on track to finish the week with losses.
The turmoil comes as the U.S. imposed new tariffs of 10% to 12.5% on imports from 60 trading partners, accounting for 99% of U.S. imports. This move aims to enforce bans on goods produced by forced labor, according to the Trump administration.
These developments have contributed to a strengthening U.S. dollar, reaching a 40-year high against the Japanese yen at 163.79 yen per dollar. Brent crude oil prices also declined for the first time in a week, dropping $3.02 to $97.67 per barrel.
