The global stock markets have started the week on a negative note, weighed down by rising oil prices and concerns over regulation of artificial intelligence.

Major US futures contracts are opening sharply lower: the technology-heavy US100 is down 1.31 per cent, while the broad-based US500 is down 0.57 per cent.

The pessimism has spread to Europe, where the German DE40 is down 0.29 per cent and the EU50 is down 0.37 per cent.

This afternoon's inflation data from Canada will be crucial in determining expectations about interest rates at the Bank of Canada.
