Mastercard and PEXA Unite to Simplify UK Homebuying with Programmable Payments
Mastercard and PEXA are teaming up to explore how account-to-account (A2A) payment innovation can simplify homebuying in the UK. The collaboration aims to provide greater certainty for buyers on completion day, a complex point in the process where property data, legal checks, and payment flows must align.
The proposed model uses programmable A2A payments to securely reserve buyer funds and release them automatically once agreed completion conditions are met. This is made possible by Mastercard's payment orchestration capabilities and PEXA's digital property completion expertise, backed by Vocalink, a Mastercard company that operates the UK's always-on A2A payments infrastructure.
The partnership will be tested through Mastercard's A2A Sandbox, giving banks and partners a practical environment to explore programmable payment use cases. This builds on PEXA's participation in the Bank of England Synchronisation Lab, focused on synchronised settlement of lender funds and property title transfer.
