Mexican Peso Nears Year-to-Date High Against Yen Amid Interest Rate Buoys
The Mexican peso has regained its strength against the yen, nearing its year-to-date high of around 9.400 yen per peso in Tokyo trading on August 17th.
This recovery comes after a series of yen-buying interventions since late July, and despite intensifying expectations for an early Bank of Japan rate hike.
The peso's strength is attributed to the interest rate differential generated by Mexico's 6.50% policy rate, which remains significantly higher than the expected 1.25% rate in Japan.
Takuya Kanda, a senior FX analyst at Gaitame.com Research Institute, believes that if the peso/yen maintains its upward trend, it could reach around 9.455 yen, the highest level since December 2008, reached in May 2024.
