Mexican Peso Surges Past 17 Per Dollar Amid High Interest Rates
The Mexican peso has reached its strongest level since June 2024, breaking below 17 per dollar as it continues to benefit from Mexico's high interest rates and a weakening U.S. dollar.
According to Trading Economics, the exchange rate touched 16.93 on August 21, marking a significant appreciation that reflects renewed investor appetite for emerging-market carry trades.
The peso's recent surge accelerated after breaking through the 17-per-dollar barrier on August 14, with the currency strengthening by 2.67% over the past month.
Mexico's central bank, Banxico, held its benchmark interest rate steady at 6.50% on August 6, maintaining one of the highest rates in the region.
