Mexican Peso Surges to 25-Month High as Traders Eye July Inflation Data
The Mexican Peso (MXN) strengthened against the US Dollar on Tuesday, reaching its highest level in 25 months as traders await the release of July's US inflation data. The USD/MXN exchange rate currently stands at 17.08, a fresh low last seen in June 2024.
According to recent economic data, Mexico's industrial output improved from a -0.8% contraction to 0.2%, surpassing forecasts of 0.3%. This unexpected increase in production has given the MXN a boost, with traders refraining from pushing the exchange rate past the 17.00 milestone.
On Wednesday, the US economic calendar will release inflation data, which is expected to show a slight decline in headline inflation from 3.5% to 3.4% year-over-year and core figures slowing down from 2.6% to 2.5% over the twelve months ending in July.
If the data comes in softer than expected, it would be positive for the Mexican Peso as the Federal Reserve would not need to increase interest rates, maintaining a favorable interest rate differential for emerging-market currencies like the MXN.
