Mexico's Choice: Low-Cost Platform or Equal Partner in North America
Mexico's economic future hangs in the balance as it considers its role in the North American trade agreement. With the USMCA, Mexico must decide whether to remain a low-cost assembly platform for foreign investors or become an equal partner with the US and Canada.
The country is at a crossroads, with government-controlled Chinese companies increasingly investing in Mexican manufacturing, automotive production, and industrial parks. While these investments create jobs, they also risk establishing a deeper Chinese footprint in North America's integrated economy.
National General Secretary of the National Food and Commerce Union, Alejandro Martínez Araiza, argues that Mexico should reject this path and instead build a stronger partnership with its neighbors. 'We are not a platform,' he says. 'We are a country.'
