Mexico's Economic Fate Tied to USMCA Renewal Talks
Renewing the USMCA is crucial for Mexico's economy, which sends over 80% of its exports to America. The country has been watching Canada-US trade talks closely, as whatever agreement is reached will likely be a template for negotiations with the Trump administration.
Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to discuss tariffs, and analysts say Mexico's negotiating position involves agreeing to what it can in order to lower the burden of those tariffs and then live to negotiate another day.
The US has already injected drama into trade talks with Mexico by alleging that the country is dumping strawberries into the US market during the winter months. Mexico's Economy Secretariat expressed concern over the preliminary decision, saying it used arbitrary concepts.
