Michigan Manufacturers Prepare for Canadian Tariff Backlash
A trade war between the US and Canada is escalating as Canadian retaliatory tariffs on US goods are set to take effect on September 8. The move comes after President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods last year, prompting Canada to announce about $20 billion dollars worth of retaliatory tariffs on US goods.
The affected sectors include steel, aluminum, dairy, fish, seafood, perfume, and clothing industries. Michigan is expected to be hit the hardest by these tariffs, with a report from the Detroit News estimating that around $1.5 billion worth of Michigan exports could be impacted.
Mike Johnston, executive vice president of government affairs and workforce development at the Michigan Manufacturing Association, warned that 'Michigan is a very diverse manufacturing economy, so tariffs hit us in various different ways up and down supply chains.'
