Michigan Swing Voters Fear Trade War with Canada Will Worsen Affordability Crisis

Michigan swing voters who backed Joe Biden in 2020 and Donald Trump in 2024 are increasingly concerned about the impact of a trade war with Canada on their state's economy. In two online focus groups held by NPR, 11 out of 13 participants expressed worry that higher tariffs would worsen an affordability crisis.

According to P.J., a 45-year-old Democrat, 'Prices are going to go up.' The more we put tariffs on stuff, the more they put tariffs on stuff. I mean, prices are just ultimately going to go up for all of us.'

The trade war with Canada is a pressing issue in Michigan, as it borders its northern neighbor and sees significant commerce between the two countries.

Some participants mentioned that they personally witness a lot of traffic crossing back and forth over the border. Tanya, a 61-year-old independent voter, noted that 'It's going to decrease the border crossings because we have two bridges now.'
