Middle East Tensions Send European Markets into Decline
European markets experienced a downturn on Wednesday due to rising tensions in the Middle East and soaring oil prices, which increased inflation concerns. The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell by 0.7%, with Germany's DAX and France's CAC 40 also registering losses.
The volatility was further exacerbated by investors' caution ahead of U.S. inflation data. However, Helsinki's blue-chip stocks defied the trend, posting a 1.6% gain.
Fortum, a Finnish energy company, led the STOXX 600 gains with a 9.6% increase following a significant power purchase agreement with tech giant Google. This deal also sparked market confidence in Helsinki, as Google committed to investing over €13 billion in AI infrastructure in Finland.
The escalation of Middle East tensions, particularly after Iranian-backed Houthi forces attacked Saudi cities, threatened oil supply disruptions and drove Brent crude prices past $100 per barrel.
