Middle East Tensions Spark Energy Price Surge in Europe
Rising energy prices are causing inflation pressure in Europe, complicated by tensions in the Middle East and disruptions to energy supplies.
International oil prices surged to six-week highs on Thursday, with Brent crude briefly rising above $97 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbing to nearly $93 per barrel.
European gas prices have increased by over 75% in the past two months, reaching their highest level in more than three years. Gas storage facilities are only 65.6% full, the lowest level on record for this time of year.
The European Central Bank (ECB) is facing a difficult balancing act between containing inflation and avoiding a recession in case of an energy supply shock.
