Millions in Uncashed Cheques Waiting to be Claimed Across Canada
Millions of dollars in unclaimed money are waiting to be reunited with their rightful owners. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) holds around $1.752 billion in uncashed cheques, averaging around $170 each.
The Alberta Unclaimed Property Program also has hundreds of thousands of items in its registry, including traveller's cheques, money orders, RRSPs, and personal property left behind by dissolved corporations and societies.
According to the CRA, 10.279 million uncashed cheques are worth approximately $1.752 billion as of October 2025. These include tax refunds, GST/HST credits, Canada Child Benefit instalments, and benefit top-ups that were issued but never deposited.
To search for unclaimed money, one can visit the CRA's website, Alberta's Unclaimed Property Program, or the Bank of Canada's Unclaimed Properties Office. Service Canada also has a database for unclaimed Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, and Employment Insurance payments.
