Millions of UK Homeowners Bracing for Mortgage Rate Hikes
Millions of homeowners in the UK are bracing for significant increases in their mortgage payments due to rising borrowing costs. The Bank of England's Financial Policy Committee has warned that five million households will face higher mortgage rates by the end of 2028, up from four million previously predicted.
The jump is attributed to global energy concerns, with oil prices reaching $100 a barrel for the first time since May. This has fueled inflation fears and dashed hopes of interest rate cuts. The Bank of England's base rate has remained at 3.75% since December last year.
As a result, mortgage rates have increased, with the average two-year fixed residential mortgage rate now standing at 5.59%, according to Moneyfactscompare.co.uk. This means borrowers can expect monthly repayments of £1,548 for a typical two-year fixed mortgage on a loan of £250,000.
Experts warn that this could have a significant impact on homeowners, particularly those seeking new deals or remortgaging. Rachel Springall from Moneyfacts advises existing borrowers to start looking for new deals now and seek advice from brokers to navigate the market.
