Mixed European Equities Market Weighs Energy Price Surge and Imminent Rate Hike
The European equities market experienced mixed results on Tuesday as investors weighed the risks of surging crude prices and an imminent interest rate hike by the European Central Bank (ECB).
Crude oil benchmarks rose for a third consecutive session, with Brent crude holding firm above $90 per barrel. This surge was fueled by Iranian military officials' threats to retaliate against US or allied strikes by targeting energy infrastructure in the Persian Gulf.
The threat of direct attacks on regional energy facilities and export terminals has heightened market anxieties, raising concerns about potential long-term supply destruction and increasing input costs for European bourses.
The ECB's expected interest rate hike on Thursday is also keeping equity valuations under pressure. Money markets have largely priced in a 25-basis-point increase from the ECB's Governing Council meeting, with preliminary August Eurozone CPI data showing headline inflation accelerating to 3.3% year-over-year.
