Mixed Jobs Report Fuels Fed's Inflation Fight
The US labor market provided a favorable backdrop for the Federal Reserve to focus on inflation in July's employment numbers. The nonfarm payrolls fell by 23,000, which was a significant miss against the expected 80,000 gain.
Despite this, private sector employers added 30,000 jobs, but this was offset by a loss of 53,000 government positions. The unemployment rate edged down to 4.1% in July from 4.2% in June, and average hourly earnings increased slightly.
The Federal Reserve's policy rate remained at 3.50% to 3.75%, with a split vote reflecting genuine tension inside the Fed. Some officials want to stay aggressive on inflation, while others are increasingly nervous about growth.
