MOF Intervention Sparks Yen Surge as BOJ Faces Pressure
The Japanese Yen surged on Thursday, sparking speculation about government intervention in the currency market. The extreme volatility seen was reminiscent of a similar event on April 30, when the Ministry of Finance (MOF) intervened, causing the USD/JPY pair to drop nearly 600 pips from its high. On this occasion, the pair fell below 160 before finding support above its 200-day EMA.
The EUR/JPY also showed significant movement, with some speculating that the MOF had indeed intervened in the currency market. While confirmation is pending until official data is released, experts point to similarities between this event and previous interventions. The price action was similar to April 30's, with a daily range wider than seen during the earlier intervention.
The USD/JPY pair traded towards its July low at 160.446, before falling below 100-day moving averages. Key support levels were steadily checked off as the decline extended to 160.31. This development has significant implications for the Bank of Japan (BOJ), which may be forced to respond with further intervention measures.
