Moldovan Citizens and Companies Save 22 Million Euros with Euro Transactions
The National Bank of Moldova (NBM) has announced that its decision to make the euro the main currency for commercial transactions and money transfers has resulted in significant cost savings for citizens and companies. According to estimates, between January 2025 and June 2026, the average spread on euro transactions in the interbank foreign exchange market decreased by approximately 24%, from 21 bani to 16 bani.
This narrowing of spreads led to a net reduction of approximately 21.8 million euros in indirect foreign exchange costs borne by bank clients. The NBM notes that this estimate is approximate and that spread dynamics are influenced by various factors, including volatility in international markets and liquidity levels.
The change was made due to the European Union becoming the country's main trading partner, with the euro accounting for a dominant share of foreign trade, remittances, and transactions on the domestic foreign exchange market. The official exchange rate remains unchanged, reflecting actual transactions and the balance of supply and demand for foreign currency.
