Mudslide Devastation Sparks Rescue Efforts in Xizang Autonomous Region
A massive mudslide hit Gyirong Port in Gyirong County, southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, last Wednesday morning. The disaster has so far claimed 16 lives, with 546 people still missing.
The central parity rate of the Chinese currency renminbi (RMB) or yuan weakened to 6.7828 against the US dollar on Monday, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System. This represents a 17-pip decline from the previous day's rate.
Rescue efforts are ongoing in Gyirong Port, with 711 personnel, 120 vehicles, and 13 search dogs deployed for grid searches. Two barrier lakes formed by landslides upstream of Gyirong Port have been largely drained, posing less risk to downstream rescue operations.
