MUFG: BoJ Rate Hike Bets Drive Japanese Yen's Trajectory
MUFG analysts believe market expectations for further Bank of Japan (BoJ) rate hikes are now the key driver for the Japanese yen's trajectory in the foreign exchange market. The BoJ has exited negative rates and tweaked yield curve control, but the timing and magnitude of future hikes remain uncertain as of early 2025.
This FX shift could spill into crypto markets, with a stronger yen affecting carry trades, yen-denominated assets, CEX fiat onramps, and yen-pegged stablecoins, increasing volatility and posing funding and adoption risks for DeFi and cross-border flows. However, this would not offer a clear bullish catalyst.
As investors price in additional BoJ tightening, the yen could find support against the US dollar, reversing some of its prolonged weakness seen in recent years. The BoJ has already taken steps away from its ultra-loose policy, but the pace and magnitude of future hikes remain uncertain, making the yen sensitive to economic data and policy signals from Tokyo.
The implications for forex markets are broad, with a stronger yen impacting Japanese exporters' earnings, influencing carry trade dynamics, and altering the attractiveness of Japanese assets for foreign investors. MUFG's analysis suggests that if the BoJ delivers on market expectations, the yen could appreciate more significantly than currently priced.
