Multifamily Leaders Prepare for Economic 'Cross Currents'
Northern Virginia-based multifamily leader and National Apartment Association Vice President of Research George Ratiu shared his economic insights on the fall season, cautioning that it could be a challenging period.
Ratiu noted that historically, September and October have been the 'trickiest' months for the stock market, driven by psychology. He doesn't expect an AI bubble to burst this October, leading to another 1929 or 2008-style crash.
However, Ratiu expressed concern about inflation taking a larger chunk of consumers' paychecks, leaving them with less disposable income. He watches for signs that consumers are struggling to pay off credit cards and other loans as potential warning signals.
Ratiu emphasized the accumulation of downside risks in the economy, including a possible Federal Reserve rate hike, ballooning U.S. debt, and questions around labor force participation. He believes these factors could upend the apparent calm in the economy.
