Musalem Warns of Inflation Risks and Urges Rate Increases to Support Growth
St. Louis Federal Reserve President Alberto Musalem has expressed concerns about inflation and its impact on the economy. He believes that inflation is currently above target, running between 2.5% and 3.0%, and must be lowered to support long-term growth.
Musalem argued that recent economic strength and investment activity are not necessarily a sign of confidence in the Federal Reserve or the bond market. Instead, he suggested that these factors are influencing bond markets and pushing back against concerns about higher long-term yields.
He noted that businesses continue to face high input costs and pointed to the potential for future supply shocks, such as a super El Niño weather event, which could complicate the disinflation process. Musalem emphasized that restoring price stability and bringing inflation back to target is crucial for supporting the economy over time.
He also discussed communication strategy, suggesting that forward guidance is most useful when interest rates are near zero. However, he noted that policymakers must focus on core inflation measures when assessing the persistence of price pressures rather than reacting solely to temporary supply shocks.
