Nagel Emerges as Contender for ECB Presidency Amid Lagarde Speculation
The European Central Bank (ECB) presidency could become open sooner than expected, and German economist Joachim Nagel is emerging as a potential candidate. Bloomberg reports indicate that discussions are underway to back Nagel for the position if a contingency arises, such as an early resignation of President Christine Lagarde.
Nagel, who assumed office as Bundesbank President in 2022, has been backed by Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil but not by Conservative Chancellor Friedrich Merz. His chances are slim, with most economists favoring Pablo Hernández de Cos, former Governor of the Bank of Spain and current General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).
Nagel's views on private money are critical; he has compared the rise of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin to the tulip mania of the 17th century. He believes that reserve assets 'must be secure, liquid and transparent' and has stated that Bitcoin is none of these things.
