Nagel Signals ECB Will Wait on Rate Hike Amid Ongoing Energy Price Volatility
European Central Bank (ECB) Governing Council member Joachim Nagel said that the ECB is well-positioned to respond to energy shocks, citing its strong position after a June rate hike. The central bank will closely monitor incoming data and developments in the Middle East before making an interest rate decision in September.
Nagel emphasized the importance of thoroughly assessing the large volume of economic data expected in the interim before deciding on an interest rate hike. This comes after the ECB unanimously decided to keep its three key interest rates unchanged, sending a strong signal that the likelihood of a rate hike in September is increasing.
The recent surge in energy prices has reignited pressure from energy costs, with international oil prices returning to around USD 100 per barrel and natural gas prices rising sharply. ECB President Lagarde noted that policymakers discussed raising rates but ultimately agreed to hold off due to the lack of noticeable second-round inflation effects from the latest surge in energy prices.
Nagel defended the decision to stand pat, stating, 'Maintaining key interest rates steady this time was the right choice.' He warned that the situation in the Middle East remains highly fragile and continues to pose significant uncertainty for the ECB's policy-making environment.
