Nagel Warns Far-Right Rise Could Scare Off Foreign Investors from Germany
German Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel expressed concern over the rise of far-right parties in Europe following the Alternative for Germany's (AfD) electoral success in Saxony-Anhalt. Speaking at a European Central Bank press conference, Nagel questioned whether such ideologies are beneficial to the country's economy and reputation.
The AfD's platform includes leaving the European Union, curbing migration, and re-establishing ties with Moscow, which has raised concerns among investors and other leaders. Nagel stated that these ideas would not attract foreign investors, who would likely be hesitant to do business in Germany if such policies prevail.
Notably, the AfD describes the euro as a failed system and advocates for Germany's exit from the common currency. This stance stands in contrast to the European Central Bank's (ECB) assertion that the euro remains popular among Europeans, with 82% of respondents in the euro zone supporting it.
