Naira Surges Past 1,800 Against Pound Amid Ongoing Reforms

The Nigerian naira has recorded its strongest performance against the British pound in July, settling at N1,814 per pound on Monday. This is a significant improvement from its value of around N1,950/£ at the close of last year.

Market data indicates that the naira's recovery is sustained by ongoing reforms in Nigeria's foreign exchange market and the Central Bank of Nigeria's efforts to enhance liquidity. The bank's aggressive clearance of outstanding foreign exchange obligations has reduced arbitrage opportunities between the official and parallel markets, helping to stabilize exchange rates.

The CBN's monetary policy stance has also helped curb inflation, supporting the value of the naira. Additionally, periodic interventions in the foreign exchange market have boosted dollar liquidity, eased pressure from unmet foreign exchange demand, and reduced payment backlogs across various sectors.
