Naira Surges to Seven-Month High Against British Pound on CBN Reforms
The Nigerian Naira has reached its highest value in seven months against the British Pound, trading at NGN 1,800/£ on the official foreign exchange market. This appreciation is largely driven by aggressive monetary policy interventions from the Central Bank of Nigeria, which recently cleared approximately USD 7 billion (NGN 11.2 trillion / KES 903 billion) in verified foreign exchange backlogs.
The clearance of these historical debts has significantly reduced pressure on the official FX window, allowing supply to better match demand and breaking a key resistance level of NGN 1,200 against the US Dollar on the parallel market. The Naira also reached a four-month high of NGN 1,120/USD.
The strengthening of the Naira has crucial implications for import-dependent sectors of the Nigerian economy, as a stronger currency lowers the cost of imported raw materials and finished goods, potentially moderating the country's soaring inflation rate. However, financial analysts remain cautiously optimistic about sustaining this momentum, which depends heavily on consistent FX inflows from crude oil exports, foreign direct investment, and diaspora remittances.
