National Commits to Budget Responsibility Rules Amid Economic Risks
The New Zealand National Party has announced its commitment to three Budget Responsibility Rules if re-elected. The rules aim to protect the economy and ensure more opportunities for New Zealanders, according to Finance spokesperson Nicola Willis.
The debt inherited from the Labour government had doubled as a proportion of GDP, leaving the current government with significant debt servicing costs. These costs are currently over $9 billion per year, which is roughly equivalent to the annual expense cost for Defence, Police, Corrections, and Customs combined.
National's approach to managing the economy is in direct contrast to Labour's, with Willis stating that Labour has not learned from its mistakes in the past. She argues that Labour's proposal for more spending will require more taxes and borrowing, which would put the economy at risk.
The three Budget Responsibility Rules proposed by National include prioritizing a return to surplus by 2028/29, keeping debt below 40% of GDP, and maintaining low taxes through right-sizing government expenditure. Willis emphasizes that these rules are crucial for preparing for future crises and building a stronger economy where New Zealanders have more jobs and opportunities.
