National Loses Economic Shield as Labour Gains Ground on Cost of Living

A new poll from Ipsos shows that on four out of five key economic issues, Labour now holds a lead over National. This includes the top-ranked issue of inflation and the cost of living, where Labour has been ahead for over a year. On managing the economy, which is traditionally a strong point for National, Labour now holds a four-point advantage.

Labour's focus on the economy is evident in their questions to Luxon during the last month of Parliament, as well as in party leader Chris Hipkins' social media posts. Luxon and National have countered by highlighting the taxes they claim a Labour-led government would bring in, but this message has not resonated with voters.

National's campaign chair, Simeon Brown, attempted to deflect concerns about the party's economic management by citing new business confidence numbers showing continued growth. However, it remains to be seen whether this message will resonate with voters.
