National Unveils Budget Responsibility Rules Ahead of New Zealand Election
New Zealand's National Party has announced its Budget Responsibility Rules if re-elected. The rules aim to protect the economy and ensure New Zealanders have more opportunities, higher wages, and quality public services.
National's Finance spokesperson Nicola Willis says that since taking office, they have continued to demonstrate responsible economic and fiscal management needed to turn the economy around. However, she warns that Labour's plans for more spending, taxes, and borrowing would put the economy at great risk.
The three Budget Responsibility Rules proposed by National include prioritizing a return to surplus in 2028/29, keeping debt below 40% of GDP, and maintaining core Crown expenditure as a share of the economy declining towards 30% of GDP. Willis says these rules reflect a more volatile world where international ratings agencies are watching New Zealand's books closely.
National claims that Labour has not learned from its past mistakes, particularly during the Covid crisis when they significantly ramped up spending, leading to higher inflation and interest rates. The National Party is challenging Labour to commit to the same Budget Responsibility Rules.
