National Unveils Plan to Drive South Island Growth
National Party Leader Christopher Luxon has unveiled a plan to drive growth across the South Island. The party claims that its investments in infrastructure, exports, energy, and public services will unlock the region's full potential.
The South Island is a significant contributor to New Zealand's economy, generating around $100 billion annually from industries such as farming, mining, tourism, and ports.
National has already increased transport investment by 42% to nearly $4 billion and secured a free trade agreement that will benefit farmers and growers. However, Luxon emphasizes that there is more work to be done.
The party's package of commitments includes enabling investment in the Rolleston intermodal freight hub, making public transport funding available for Queenstown gondola solutions, developing a new Government Policy Statement on mining and extraction, and completing Tower Three at Christchurch Hospital. These investments are expected to support growing communities, cut red tape, and deliver better public services.
