Nepal's Public Debt Surges by NPR 300 Billion in One Year

The Nepali government's outstanding public debt has increased by approximately NPR 300 billion in the past year, reaching a total of NPR 2.974 trillion as of Ashad 2082.

This represents a significant rise from the total debt of NPR 2.674 trillion recorded in Ashad 2081.

The Public Debt Management Office attributes this increase to both new government borrowing and the appreciation of foreign currencies, including the US dollar, which has added an additional burden of about NPR 167 billion to the outstanding public debt.

Economist Dilliraj Khanal warned that if the increasing public debt is not used to boost economic productivity, it could become difficult for Nepal to manage its debt.
