Netflix Series Injects Millions into SA Economy
The Netflix series 'My Brilliant Career' not only brought to life the story of Sybylla Melvyn but also had a significant impact on the economy and culture of South Australia. The production injected an estimated AU$19 million into the local economy through direct production spend, employing 600 creatives, crew, cast, and extras, and partnering with 410 local businesses.
Amanda Duthie, Content Director, Netflix Australia and New Zealand, stated that getting the world of the story right was crucial to honouring Miles Franklin's 1901 novel. South Australia provided the ideal backdrop with its sprawling outback landscapes, vineyards, and century-old homesteads.
The production also made a conscious effort to preserve history and heritage, contributing to the preservation of several historic buildings, including the Para Para house at Gawler and Yallum Park Homestead at Penola. Behind-the-scenes, the team reduced carbon emissions, waste, and resource consumption by operating on renewable energy during daylight hours, using hybrid vehicles, and donating leftover meals to crew members.
The show also broke new ground in First Nations storytelling, employing First Nations people across various positions and partnering with six First Nations writers who helped shape the show's characters and storylines. The result is a culturally resonant series that has already drawn 7.8M views and counting.
