The Bank of England has received a significant amount of gold from the Netherlands' central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), as part of a relocation effort amid 'increasing geopolitical unrest'. The transfer, which took place between March and August, involved moving approximately £9.1 billion worth of gold, equivalent to 86 tonnes, from North America to London.

The Dutch central bank's president, Olaf Sleijpen, explained that the move aimed to strengthen the country's crisis preparedness by repositioning its gold reserves in a more liquid trading environment. He stated that 'with this step, we have improved the deployability of the gold reserves' and emphasized that it is necessary to strengthen resilience and preparedness.

The relocation has made London the primary location for Dutch gold holdings, with its share jumping from 18.1% to 32.1% of total reserves. Previously, New York held 31.3% of Dutch gold reserves, while Ottawa stored 19.7%. Both North American locations now hold equal shares at 18.5% following the transfer.

DNB employed a dual strategy that balanced financial transactions with actual bullion movement to relocate the gold. Approximately 59 tonnes were sold at New York's facilities and simultaneously repurchased in London, avoiding physical complexities. More than 27 tonnes of physical gold bars traveled from North American vaults to the Dutch facility at Zeist, with an equivalent quantity subsequently dispatched from there to London.
