Netherlands Shifts $10 Billion Gold Reserve from North America to London

De Nederlandsche Bank quietly relocated 86 metric tons of gold worth approximately $10 billion from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Bank of Canada to London between March and August. This significant logistical move is not just administrative housekeeping, but a strategic decision made by central banks in response to an increasingly unpredictable world.

The Dutch central bank's official reason for the move was crisis preparedness and improving the tradability of its reserves. Governor Olaf Sleijpen noted that gold held in New York and Ottawa cannot be deployed as quickly during a global crunch compared to gold sitting in London, which is at the heart of global physical gold trading.

London's financial ecosystem allows for immediate liquidity, making it an attractive location for central banks to store their gold reserves. De Nederlandsche Bank used a hybrid approach to minimize risk, selling 59 tons of gold in New York and buying equivalent London-standard bars locally, while physically moving a smaller batch from North America to London.

This move has significant implications for global trust. France recently reduced its footprint at the New York Fed, repatriating and repositioning billions in bullion. Central bankers are recalibrating their risk calculations, recognizing that geographical diversification is not just about storing wealth during peacetime but also accessing it during times of geopolitical friction.
