Netherlands Shifts 86 Tonnes of Gold from US and Canada to London Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The Dutch central bank, DNB, has moved 86 tonnes of gold from the US and Canada to London. The transfer was carried out between March and August, with 27 tonnes coming from New York and Ottawa. The remaining gold was sold in New York and bought again in London.
According to the DNB, this move is part of a strategy to strengthen the country's preparedness and resilience in case of a crisis. Gold stored at the Bank of England is considered easily tradeable, making it easier to buy or sell quickly in times of need.
The decision comes amid growing geopolitical tensions between nations, with the US imposing tariffs on Canadian goods. The Netherlands holds a total of 612.4 tonnes of gold, worth around €72.2 billion, with 30.8% stored domestically and 32.1% now held in London.
