Netherlands Transfers Billions in Gold as Geopolitical Tensions Rise
The Netherlands' central bank (DNB) has made a significant move in response to the ongoing trade war and geopolitical tensions. The DNB has relocated almost half of its gold reserves from North America, specifically New York and Ottawa, to the Bank of England in London.
This unprecedented move involves 86 tons of gold, which was sold in New York and then purchased in London. According to the DNB, this relocation aims to improve the tradability of their gold reserves. The bank's president, Olaf Sleijpen, stated that they expect not to use these reserves but want to strengthen their resilience and preparedness.
The decision comes amid increasing tensions between the US and Canada in their trade war, as well as the ongoing Iran War, which has impacted global trade. The DNB still holds 18.5% of its gold in North America, with a significant decrease in New York's share from 31.3% to around 18.5%. The total gold holdings of the DNB amount to approximately $83.8 billion.
