New Zealand and India Strengthen Economic Ties Through Tourism and Trade
New Zealand's economy is increasingly connected to India through tourism, trade, business, and people-to-people links, according to Indian business journalist Nimitt Dixit. Dixit visited New Zealand as part of an ANZ-hosted programme that brought him face-to-face with tourism operators, farmers, business leaders, and policymakers.
The programme took Dixit through Rotorua, Wairarapa, Wellington, and Auckland, showcasing the industries contributing to New Zealand's export economy. One key stop was Rotorua, where the growing Indian visitor market is creating new opportunities for the tourism sector.
Indian traveller numbers have been rising, with 83,000 arrivals in the year to May, highlighting the growing importance of the Indian market for New Zealand tourism. The Free Trade Agreement signed between New Zealand and India in April 2026 provides duty-free access for Indian exports to New Zealand and improves market access for New Zealand exporters into India.
Tourism could become another important bridge between the two economies as these wider economic ties develop. Dixit's visit also extended beyond tourism, showcasing the people and enterprises behind New Zealand's economic activity in Wairarapa, Wellington, and Auckland.
