New Zealand Dollar Crashes Amid RBNZ Rate Hike Disappointment
The New Zealand dollar (NZD) fell sharply against the US dollar (USD) on September 2, with NZD/USD down by 0.81% to $0.58408.
The sell-off was largely due to a 'buy-the-rumor, sell-the-fact' reaction following the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's (RBNZ) monetary policy decision, which saw a 25 basis point rate hike to 2.75%. While this move had been fully discounted by markets, investors were disappointed by the central bank's cautious approach to removing monetary stimulus.
RBNZ policymakers emphasized uneven domestic economic recovery and downside growth risks, leading to a downward repricing of short-term New Zealand interest rate expectations and compressed front-end yield differentials.
