New Zealand Must Be Bolder in Pursuing Opportunities: Deloitte
New Zealand is known for being cautious and practical, but to achieve its economic ambitions, it needs to be bolder in pursuing opportunities, says Mike Horne, Chief Executive of Deloitte New Zealand. The country's tendency to focus on identifying risks can sometimes lead to missing out on growth.
Horne notes that while the world remains unpredictable due to geopolitical tensions, rapidly changing technology, and shifting economic conditions, there is a growing willingness among business leaders to look further down the road and invest in their future. Deloitte itself talks about being the 'Deloitte of the future', recognizing that organizations must think ahead to stay competitive.
Horne highlights the importance of investing in renewable energy, as New Zealand has an opportunity to expand its production while continuing to grow its economy. He also emphasizes the need for staying connected to the world through trade, investment, talent, and ideas, which is crucial for a small country like New Zealand that competes globally.
The role of technology, particularly AI, will be significant in shaping the future. Horne believes that AI has the potential to amplify human capabilities, making people more efficient and focused on higher-value work. However, he stresses that technology alone is not the answer and that human qualities such as communication, judgment, trust, leadership, and collaboration remain essential.
