New Zealand Public Servants Strike Against Wage Cuts and Job Reductions

About 10,000 public servants in New Zealand took part in a half-day strike on September 9 against their government's plans to cut wages and jobs. The strike involved workers from several departments, including the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), and the Ministry of Social Development (MSD). Demonstrations were held in major cities across the country.

The government wants to reduce public sector wages by about 2.3 percent, which is below the current inflation rate of 4.1 percent. The Public Service Association (PSA) has offered concessions to try to reach a deal with the government. However, some workers are skeptical that any agreement will be reached.

A worker at MBIE in Wellington expressed concerns about the impact of job cuts on regulation and public services. He also doubted that a Labour government would make significant changes to address wage stagnation and rising inequality.
